Real-time data analysis makes painting processes smarter

The system, developed by Stuttgart-based mechanical and plant engineering firm Dürr, enables the analysis of automated paint shops with millisecond accuracy. The aim of the Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) solution is to prevent the occurrence of faults and errors.

To monitor painting systems in real time, EcoScreen Equipment Analytics from Dürr records the process data and signals from all production-relevant sensors, from the color valve in the front robot arm through the air heater in the electrostatic rotary atomizer. The IIoT solution also checks the positions, torques, and temperatures of the painting and handling robots’ individual axes and collects additional data, for positioning a body to be painted or relating to errors that have occurred, for example.

The Visual Analytics module for visualizing the relevant data then maps the data collected over the course of several weeks with millisecond accuracy and returns detailed information to accelerate troubleshooting. In addition, Streaming Analytics enables the data to be analyzed in real time, to correlate any anomalies in the paint finish with the signal curves recorded. Dürr AG is currently working on AI modules for predicting adverse events for the prevention of possible system faults. The software uses the IIoT platform ADAMOS , which is already used to network production processes in various areas of mechanical engineering.
