On October 29, 2019, the Essen-based ifm group is celebrating its 50th anniversary. It all started with the invention of inductive sensors for 220 V - fast forward to the present day, and ifm has established itself on the market as a service-focused sensor specialist through years of intensive collaboration with its customers, and now has more than 7,000 employees in over 85 countries. But despite having grown much larger, the company has, to this day, retained all the virtues of its early years, while also combining the flexibility and individuality of a small business with the quality and professionalism of a large corporation. And what better way to celebrate this milestone than by getting involved in a truly futuristic endeavor - constructing the world’s fastest series e-boat "SAY 29E Runabout Carbon", which is capable of reaching a whopping 89 km/h.

The initiators of the project at SAY GmbH have nicknamed their masterpiece the "Wave Cutter" because of the way it cuts through the water at remarkable speeds. The Runabout's electric drive can achieve up to 500 hp and boasts a cruising range of at least 50 km thanks to its battery capacity of 120 kilowatt-hours. The emission-free drive makes it possible to experience the thrill of high-speed boating on waters that are off-limits for combustion engines - in southern Germany, Austria and Switzerland, for example. To ensure this adrenaline rush does not come to an abrupt end, a CR0451 BasicDisplay from ifm electronic shows the remaining range and current system status at all times. It automatically switches between day and night mode depending on the lighting conditions, ensuring the captain can easily monitor the craft's performance at any point. Not only that, but the BasicDisplay can be used to configure a variety of charging modes and display all the data relevant to operating the boat, such as temperatures, revolutions per minute and voltages. The SAY 29E Runabout Carbon was developed by SAY GmbH - based in Wangen im Allgäu, Germany - in collaboration with the Austrian company Kreisel, which supplied the drive package. As the boat's name already suggests, the hull of the SAY 29E is made of a 100% carbon composite, a lightweight material known for its outstanding strength and rigidity.
