The Interdisciplinary Center for Machine Learning and Data Analytics (IZMD) was opened on the University of Wuppertal’s Freundenberg campus at the end of March. In close cooperation with local businesses and industry partners, scientists from the Information Technology/Electrical Engineering and Mathematics departments will predominately carry out applied research here. One focus of this research will be autonomous driving, in particular automated image recognition, whereby the scientists will tackle, among other issues, the problem of teaching computers to reliably distinguish between roads, humans, and vehicles.
The 250 suppliers in the Bergisches Land region’s automotive industry in particular stand to benefit from the findings of this and other projects. The Bergische Innovation Platform for Artificial Intelligence (BIT) is helping promote the cooperation between science and industry.
