US’s first large-scale offshore wind farm to be built

The wind farm off the coast of New York will be built by Norwegian company Equinor and initially comprise 60 to 80 wind turbines. Experts see enormous potential for further wind farms in the US.

Offshore wind farms are currently still in the development phase in the US. Norwegian energy company Equinor , the successor to oil company Statoil, has now won the first major tender for the construction of a wind farm off the US coast. A wind farm with 60 to 80 wind turbines and a capacity of 816 MW is to be built off the coast of New York. The total costs will be approximately US$3 billion. It is scheduled to begin operation in late 2024, with its wind turbines able to power more than 500,000 households. By 2035, offshore wind energy off the coast of New York is to be expanded to a capacity of 9,000 MW.

Equinor will manufacture the foundations for the wind turbines in New York State and also plans to invest US$60 million in the expansion of New York Harbor, to support the construction of further offshore wind farms. The US Department of Energy estimates the technical potential of offshore wind farms off the US coast at around 2,058 GW.
