Partners from research and industry in seven EU member states are joining forces in the European Battery Union (EBU). As Volkswagen announced , the joint research activities of the EBU will cover the entire battery value chain for electric cars – from raw material production and cell technology and production processes through battery recycling. The plan is also to develop plant technologies to facilitate competitive battery cell production in the European Union. The EBU’s findings will be shared between all the partners across national borders. The joint research activities are set to kick off at the start of 2020.

All the partners plan to step up their investments for the additional research activities. Money for the research will also come from funds provided by the German Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy (BMWi) for battery cell production up to 2022.
