Start-up Clean Bio Heat is helping represent Sweden - this year's partner country - at HANNOVER MESSE. The fledgling company is showcasing the first system that recovers heat from condensed flue gas, while also massively reducing flue gas particles.
Stockholm-based Clean Bio Heat is an energy-sector start-up that has developed a truly unique technical solution - its FGR system. At the Swedish Energy Agency pavilion in Hall 12 at HANNOVER MESSE 2019, the company is demonstrating how its FGR system can be used to reduce particles in flue gas, while also recovering heat from the condensed flue gas.
To recover heat, the FGR uses the exhaust gases from biomass boilers in the 100- to 1000-kilowatt range. To ensure this process runs as efficiently as possible, Clean Bio Heat uses its patented control system for the condensation process. At the same time, the resulting high level of condensation also reduces particle emissions, with larger soot particles captured in the condensation, and smaller particles removed in a subsequent cleaning step. Overall, this system is said to cut particle emissions by up to 90 percent, while also improving energy efficiency by approximately 20 percent. The recovered heat is then fed back into the boiler or used in a secondary heating system. Thanks to the high degree of condensation, the system’s exhaust gases are both dry and cool, eliminating the risk of condensation in the chimney.

Could astronauts be out of a job soon?
It's highly unlikely - even though the German Research Center for Artificial Intelligence (DFKI) is showcasing a new generation of autonomous space robots at HANNOVER MESSE 2019 that don’t need much human help.
While most robots in space are still passive bystanders or in any event controlled from Earth by humans, thanks to the DFKI they could soon be operating independently and over extended periods in the extreme conditions of outer space. The DFKI's Robotics Innovation Center is currently developing pioneering hardware and software concepts and putting them through their paces during 'analog missions' here on Earth. The scientists involved in these projects are now showcasing their research findings and robotic space systems at the DFKI stand in Hall 2.
Given that piloting a robot remotely from Earth is impractical, particularly due to the delay in communication with far-away celestial bodies, it is hoped that space robots in the future will work independently. Led by Prof. Frank Kirchner, the team at the DFKI Robotics Innovation Center in Bremen is therefore developing autonomous robot technologies for use in outer space that are designed to be aware of everything going on around them thanks to numerous different sensors. Artificial intelligence methods and algorithms, such as machine learning processes, are set to enable robots to act and make decisions independently - and even learn from their behavior. After all, as the DFKI researchers suggest, this is the only way to ensure they can be deployed for lengthy planetary and orbital missions without human intervention.
But this doesn't mean astronauts will be out of a job, as they will be able to work hand-in-hand with the robots in outer space - to build infrastructure, for example. The DFKI is in Hannover to demonstrate how it is using different levels of autonomy in this context, with its robots designed to act either more or less autonomously depending on the complexity of the task at hand. If a robot gets stuck on a problem, the astronaut's job is to step in and teach it a new behavior pattern. What's more, the DFKI is looking into new procedures for analyzing and identifying intention to ensure successful human-machine collaboration. Using these procedures in conjunction with physiological data, for example, the robots should be able to identify their human colleague’s emotions and state of mind and factor this in when planning and improving their activities.

Grab the popcorn!
The Büsgen Institute at the University of Göttingen has been researching everyday objects and building materials based on popcorn for quite some time. At HANNOVER MESSE 2019, the institute is showcasing potential applications for this renewable raw material, including insulation panels.
Even though there is still clearly not enough being done, it is becoming increasingly clear that every move toward averting wide-sweeping global warming, as inconvenient as it may be, is a step in the right direction. Among other things, this calls for using sustainable materials in construction. Stricter energy efficiency regulations play a role here, while changes in society are seeing people turn their backs on plastic and demand near-natural substances derived from renewable raw materials as a form of insulation. The Chemistry and Process Engineering of Composites work group at the Büsgen Institute - an academic body within the Faculty of Forest Sciences and Forest Ecology at the University of Göttingen – focuses mainly on wooden materials and the use of alternative binding agents. After developing a lightweight chipboard with a middle layer made partially of popcorn granules, the group ultimately came up with the idea of creating products comprising nothing but popcorn and binding agents. The researchers are now unveiling their popcorn insulation panels to visitors from across the globe for the first time at HANNOVER MESSE 2019.
It is particularly popcorn's low bulk density and its consequently low thermal conductivity that make it perfect for use as an innovative insulation material in construction. In combination with near-natural or mineral-oil-based binding agents, popcorn can be used to create composites with different kinds of properties for a whole host of applications. With this in mind, the Büsgen Institute is focusing its research efforts on creating sufficiently durable board-type composites based on popcorn for use as insulation panels in drywall installation.

Seal manufacturer C. Otto Gehrckens is unveiling its latest innovation - FKM compound Vi 900, a material that has proven its suitability as a reliable elastomer seal even under the harshest test conditions to the NORSOK M-710 standard and come through hardness testing with the best possible rating of 4 times "0000" without any damage. This makes Vi 900 ideal for use in production areas that place particularly high demands on seals due to the risk of explosive decompression. The manufactures of FKM compound Vi 900 aim to use HANNOVER MESSE 2019 to highlight the excellent low-temperature stability of this latest innovation. Boasting a TR-10 value of -40 °C, Vi 900 is said to be suitable even for applications at temperatures as low as -50 °C. It also meets the U.S. requirements for oil and gas plants, API 6A and 6D, in addition to the NORSOK standard. According to its developers, this high-performance material, combined with an exceptional compression set at low temperatures, is poised to set new standards for AED (anti-explosive decompression) and RGD (rapid gas decompression) sealing materials. Another advantage of the new FKM compound is its excellent resistance to a wide range of specific media and chemicals - from mineral oils, aliphatic, aromatic and chlorinated hydrocarbons, to acids in a variety of concentrations and weak alkalis. The material also boasts very low gas permeability, making it suitable for a wide range of applications. Geared towards longevity!

Ovako from this year’s partner country, Sweden, is part of the Japanese Nippon Steel & Sumitomo Metal Corporation and is a manufacturer of high-purity engineering steels and other products for the roller bearing and gearing industry. Working in close collaboration with Ovako, GWJ Technology GmbH has now implemented two high-purity steels - 159X and 159Q. The company, which is also an exhibitor at HANNOVER MESSE 2019, specializes in creating standardized calculation software for mechanical engineering and bespoke calculation and configuration tools with CAD data for optimizing technical sales processes.
The special steels now implemented at GWJ are based on the case-hardening steel 18CrNiMo7-6 and, as a result of significantly reduced impurities, feature modified Wöhler curves. This means that, in static terms, both steels are comparable to 18CrNiMo7-6. However, when it comes to fatigue strength, 159Q offers a flank load capacity that is approximately 30 percent more efficient, and a tooth root load capacity that is 60 percent more efficient. These values are based on investigations carried out by Ovako in the machine tool laboratory of RWTH Aachen University and the Gear Research Centre (FZG) in Munich. The performance improvements achieved in 159X steel are somewhat more modest, making it particularly suitable for essential improvements to existing structures.

How can moving parts be made better and cheaper? Thousands of developers come to HANNOVER MESSE every year wondering exactly that. And every year, igus brings its latest motion plastics to the trade fair to deliver just the right answers - exhibiting products that tell you whether they’re worth buying before they’re even put to use.
igus GmbH is a permanent fixture at HANNOVER MESSE. The company has announced no fewer than 120 new product innovations and add-ons for this year’s stand – and most of them let their users know beforehand whether or not they're worth buying. This is because the use of motion plastics from igus can be simulated, meaning the service life can be calculated beforehand. One of the many highlights the company is showcasing in Hannover is a marketplace model, which helps a variety of customers quickly find and configure or build the right automation solution for them.
Under the catchy heading "From 'rawbots' to robots", the robolink articulated arms, combined with a digital platform concept, are designed to make the transition to low-cost automation an easy one. After all, according to igus, lots of users would like to implement low-cost automation for just a few thousand euros, instead of pursuing established, fully automated solutions at a much higher price. However, this wish can only become a reality once these three questions have been answered authoritatively - "What works together?", "How good is the solution?" and "Who can help me?". Motion plastics specialists igus plans to answer all three of these questions at HANNOVER MESSE 2019, where it is exhibiting a new 4- to 5-axis plastic “rawbot” and an online marketplace model for suppliers and users.

The fleet from the Far East!
The Japanese electronics and mechanical engineering company FANUC is poised to take HANNOVER MESSE 2019 by storm. In addition to its latest developments in integrated production, the company’s fleet of collaborative robots is set to be a particular hit with trade fair visitors.
FANUC seems well prepared for the production of the future. The Japanese electronics and mechanical engineering company is at HANNOVER MESSE 2019 to showcase a wide range of robot-based automation technology and demonstrate how its IoT platform FIELD can be used to integrate systems into any manufacturing environment. That's why its exhibition centers around integrated solutions that cover the entire spectrum - from its wide-ranging product portfolio to concepts such as "service first". One of the modules that has already proven itself in practice is "Zero Downtime" (ZDT), a scalable preventive maintenance tool. FANUC now even has its own unit for smaller groups of robots, which is used to capture and evaluate operating data - a module that may also spark the interest of medium-sized companies.
Some of the more "hands-on" highlights of the FANUC stand include the company’s fleet of collaborative robots, the latest models of which are on display in a range of variants, including one with integrated image processing. FANUC has not yet released all information, so it will be interesting to see whether it’s planning to reveal any additions to its model range at the trade fair. However, the exhibits that definitely will be on show include the latest robot models, such as the R-1000iA complete with spot welding package, the new SCARA robots and a whole range of other modified models.

A small gesture can go a long way!
Kinemic, a start-up founded as a spin-off of the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology, is unveiling its first industrial wearable at HANNOVER MESSE 2019 - the "Kinemic Band". Thanks to its gesture control software, this new innovation is designed to make it even easier to operate digital devices.
Visitors to HANNOVER MESSE 2019 can try out the "Kinemic Band", which is already being used by several major companies, at the stands of SAP, Trebing + Himstedt, Elabo and, of course, Kinemic itself. Dr. Christoph Amma, Managing Director of Kinemic GmbH, outlines how the start-up plans to make industrial workflows simpler, quicker and more convenient with its wearable: "By developing the "Kinemic Band", we've made gesture control available to every employee and made it fit for industrial use. We have created a new kind of interaction that is very natural, personal and even fun. With the help of hands-free operation, we've also managed to achieve significant improvements for our industrial customers in terms of the efficiency and usability of their digital assistance systems."
The "Kinemic Band" uses a sensor connected via Bluetooth to transmit the wearer's movement data. The band also boasts a battery life of up to twelve hours to ensure it has no problem lasting an entire shift. The "Kinemic Band" software recognizes twelve gestures, which can be assigned to commands, keyboard inputs, macros or program actions. The gesture recognition system does not have to be activated separately. Instead, the intelligent software uses state-of-the-art machine learning algorithms to recognize whether it is dealing with a deliberate gesture or a normal, everyday movement. The "Kinemic Band" also features AirMouse technology designed to track the user's wrist movements directly, which - according to Kinemic - makes it ideal for certain tasks, such as entering numbers, changing volume or adjusting controls.
The band underwent extensive testing with pilot customers during the development stage. In fact, some companies are already supporting the “Kinemic Band” with their software, including Ubimax, bitnamic, ioxp and Deutsche Bahn. Given that it fully supports mobile and hands-free workflows, and can even be worn under gloves, the band is said to accommodate a very wide range of applications - from assembly assistance systems, AR-supported maintenance, and remote maintenance to quality control, cleanroom, food production and many more.
