Doing biomimetics means transferring biological mechanisms into technical designs. The challenge lies in delivering a reliable technical validation of the biomimetic concept. When working with SMEs, this validation is prerequisite to determine economic feasibility. To do so, the biomimetic process is followed in the technology pull-manner, starting at the technical challenge. With the implementation of a step-wise project approach, financial risks for the SME are managed while access to future-oriented problem solutions is maintained. In consequence, the education of biomimeticists focusses both on a highly interdisciplinary curriculum and gathering problem-oriented project experiences. In addition, biomimetics students are taught to analyze upcoming challenges and develop ideas for the next but one product generation - in direct exchange with future users. As a result, bioimetics graduates are ideal employees for technical development purposes in SMEs.
