The SMiLE project, co-financed by BMBF, developed efficient processes for manufacturing lightweight composites and presented at the tech transfer forum. Within the project a lightweight multi-material car chassis for e-mobility was developed and finally built up as technology demonstrator. The presentation focusses on the achieved improvements of the developed composite process chains. Two structural composite components were realized and integrated in the chassis as a module.

The front floor structure is a functions-integrated CFRP part with sandwich cores. Using the ultra-RTM process chain, developed in SMiLE, now allows a rapid and efficient manufacturing of this component. The rear floor body consists of thermoplastic tape and long-fiber reinforced thermoplast (LFT-D). This component is formed and compression molded with an innovative process, the so-called local advanced tailored LFT-D.
