In industry, high-performance ceramics enable considerable leaps in development in the manufacture of components with the highest demands, such as high temperature, corrosion, shape and wear resistance. These requirements can largely be met by monolithic ceramics and composite ceramics. The application potential of these high-performance materials is countered by the technical and economic challenges of converting them into marketable products. The resistance of these materials in particular makes machining more difficult. In this context, the development and optimization of fine machining technologies are the focus of industrial suppliers and users of grinding technology and therefore also of research institutes. This project represents some new developments of the Fraunhofer IPK and the IWF in Berlin in the field of machining of new high performance ceramics.
