Radio-frequency (RF) remote controllers are widely used in multiple industrial applications like manufacturing, construction and transportation. Cranes, drillers, and miners, among others, are commonly equipped with RF remotes, which have become the weakest link in safety-critical IIOT applications. We conducted an extensive analysis on popular radio-controller vendors, which revealed a lack of security features at different levels, with obscure, proprietary protocols instead of standard ones. This technology appears to be vulnerable to attacks like command spoofing, command injection, emergency-stop abuse, and malicious re-pairing with consequences ranging from sabotage, injury, theft, or extortion.In this presentation we share with the audience the findings of our research and discuss the problems in detail. We conclude with suggestions and procedures for improving the overall current situation.
