The need for autonomous operations keeps growing in particular in industries like mining and oil&gas, where locations are remote, work environments are harsh and hazardous, and skilled workforce is short or retiring soon. Safe and efficient operation - and in the next step autonomous operations - rely on accurate and rich data about the conditinon of plants and equipment. Belt conveyors in mines are often production-critical equipment which is being monitored and remote controlled continuously. Monitoring, however, does not include the many thousands of rollers which carry the belt and material, and which cause substantial energy loss and belt wear when failing. ABB developed a technology to monitor roller conditions, using advanced sensors to detect all different failure modes of rollers, and a robotic rail vehicle as a sensor carrier. This presentation covers the core elements of the robotic vehicle and sensor system for reliable operation in harsh mining environments.
