Fiber-reinforced composites require for structural design in contrast to many other materials information about the microstructure, since it distinctively influences the mechanical properties. The microstructure is mainly determined by the manufacturing process and so-called manufacturing effects. For this reason, KIT-FAST is developing new simulation methods for the industrially relevant processes and for a continuous virtual process chain, in order to virtually predict manufacturability and manufacturing effects. Together with the startup SIMUTENCE, a spin-off of KIT-FAST, these methods will now be made available to the industry. This presentation will show how manufacturing effects can be taken into account in the structural design of fiber-reinforced composite components and how the manufacturability of a specific geometry can be initially ensured by means of the virtual process chain.
