Lean production is the leading concept for a holistic improvement in mechanical and plant engineering. The value stream-oriented way of thinking and integration of employees/suppliers in process improvements are the basis. The future project Industry 4.0 has a vision factory in which resources can network themselves, products know their path, employees are relieved of routine and optimal decisions become possible. In the past, Lean's principles were the measure of things for process improvement, so companies are asking themselves how the lean way is going to be continued in times of Industry 4.0.

The lecture addresses conflicts, but above all shown the further development of both approaches. A concrete course of action is presented. The results were developed by the working group Lean (30 company representatives) of the VDMA and the Institute for Production Management, Technology and Machine Tools (PTW) of the TU Darmstadt.
