A very important challenge in the automotive industry is the reduction of CO2 emissions. This can be achieved by reducing the weight of the car. In most of the currently produced cars, the body has one of the largest parts by weight, so that the designing of lightweight cars becomes very important. A promising approach for automated, large scale production of lightweight car structures with a high stiffness to weight ratio is the combination of high strength steel alloys and CFRP prepregs in a fiber metal laminate (FML) which can be processed by technologies such as deep drawing. In current research works at the Chair of Forming Technologies (LUF) at the Paderborn University, innovative manufacturing processes for the production of automotive structure components made of FML are developed. This paper presents the results of technological and numerical research being performed at the LUF into the forming of FML.
