How can metallic additive manufacturing find its way into automotive industry? Using the example of the development of the LightHinge+, an ultra-light bonnet hinge, we show you the way to small-series automotive production. Designed by EDAG in cooperation with simufact and voestalpine, LightHinge+ makes full use of the potential of additive production through efficient software-supported engineering. The ultimate weight reduction and integration of a pedestrian protection function is achieved with little rework for small series. A key factor here is simufacts process simulation of additive manufacturing to predict and limit distortion and residual stresses. In particular, the compensation of the distortion could be validated by the adjustment with optical 3D measurements.
