The required reduction of CO2-Emissions is a major challenge for automotive engineering since decades and is becoming increasingly important in view of current economic, social and political developments. Therefore the realisation of weight reduction becomes continuously important in all sectors of mechanical engineering. By consistently utilising lightweight construction concepts in bulk metal forming, significant contributaions can be made to comply with the increasingly stringent emission guidelines at acceptable costs. In the context of this lecture, various lightweight approaches will be presented using representative components such as piston pins, gear shafts, gear rims and wheel hubs, and the respective lightweight potential of these approaches will be discussed.
