The digitalization of existing production plants is a central challenge within the field of vertical integration of production plants. The German Research Center for Artificial Intelligence (DFKI) has developed various solutions together with the partner consortium of SmartFactory-KL. Various edge device solutions of the partner companies have been integrated into the joint demonstration plant. All devices are able to collect data from the modules of the plant and send them to a Cloud Plattform using the standardized communication protocol OPC UA via the existing SmartFactory integration layer. In the modules, edge devices also support older protocols. They represent a standard interface for all the modules. In the context of condition monitoring, conclusions can be drawn from the data about the machines using smart data analytics which, for example, helps to predict when maintenance tasks should be performed.
