Advanced sensors such as cameras (thermal, multispectral, visual),  gas sensors, etc. provide rich information for condition monitoring and fault detection but would be too costly for permanent installation around industrial plants. Drones as sensor carriers are being used but have operational challenges and limitations. We present an alternative as sensor carrier - an autonomous rail vehicle. It was designed for inspection of mining conveyors but can be adopted to other outdoor environments. The key challenge was to develop the mechanical system design of the rail and the vehicle, being cost efficient for many km of rail installation, rugged, durable, and safe to operate. This presentation covers the mechanical design of rail and vehicle, being well balanced between the factors cost, robustness, compactness, and lightweight.
