Microwave technology is not only established in the kitchen as an energy-efficient heating and drying method. For applications in the field of lightweight construction, however, the use of the working in the gigahertz range radiation is still in its infancy. In co-operation between the Technical University of Wildau and the Research Devosion Polymer Materials and Composite PYCO of the Fraunhofer IAP, an industrial microwave system and a multi-frequency continuous microwave system developed together with microwave specialists for the processing of polymers and composites are used. The process can be used both in thermoplastic or thermosetting plastics as polymeric matrix at the stage of semi-finished products, as well as in the production of components made of fiber composite components. Successful examples will be shown. Likewise, the research needs for this sustainable and energy-efficient process technology are shown.
