Magnesium-based nanocomposites offer promising low-cost materials for small batch applications, such as automotive or aerospace applications. The Mg sand casting alloy Elektron21 and the die casting alloy AM60 were reinforced with AlN nanoparticles with a diameter of 80 nm. In order to break up particle clusters in the melt, an ultrasonic assisted casting process was used. The grain size, the tensile mechanical properties and the pressure creep strength were investigated. The addition significantly refines the microstructure of AM60. Mechanical tests show excellent yield strength, tensile strength and ductility of AM60 + 1AlN. Electron21 did not detect grain refining and tensile strain, although creep strength improved by an order of magnitude. This shows how different two Mg alloys react to 1% AlN reinforcement.
