The world ocean is a key element of the global climate, storing 93% of excess heat and 35% of anthropogenic CO2, and is threatened from due to human impact such as plastic pollution. Since the in-situ observations over the ocean are scarce, additional information from remote areas of the ocean is important to increase the knowledge of the ocean. We will show data collected from Race Yachts participating in the Volvo Ocean Race. This novel approach connects sport, business and science as the boats will contribute to gather Ocean Data based on 3 main components: Meteorological data - to improve weather forecasts; Scientific drifter buoys - to gather data on surface temperature and currents; On-board measurement instruments to gather data CO2, Chlorophyll, and Microplastic underway. These measurements are done with the help of innovative solutions from two Kiel based SMEs, SubCtech and bbe Moldaenke.
