Description

During the hands-on activities at the ozean:labor (ocean:laboratory), everything revolves around the topic of plastic. Visitors can, for example, sieve microplastics from sediment, and then analyse it. Using another experiment, the scientists highlight the use of microplastics in cosmetics.

The programme is supplemented by short lectures and video clips, as well as presentation of the Germany-wide Plastikpiraten (plastic pirates) citizen science project (https://bmbf-plastik.de/plastikpiraten). More than 9,000 boys and girls have been involved in the project to date, and collected data on plastic occurrence at and in rivers throughout Germany.

Tim Kießling, research associate in the ozean:labor at the Kieler Forschungswerkstatt, Plastikpiraten (plastic pirates) project.

Johanna Kruger, doctoral researcher at the Kiel Science Outreach Campus (KiSOC) and research associate in the ocean:labor at the Kieler Forschungswerkstatt.
