Aside from the massive increase of the demand for cross vendor communication and data exchange crossing boundaries of machines and production lines, a huge number of additional challenges are lying ahead. The use of OPC UA as a standardized means for communication between components on machinery is claimed to be the one-size-fits-all cure.

The session dives deeper into the reasons how a whole vertical was led astray by the blind trust into the possibilities and technical capabilities of a single standard and apparently was lulled into thinking that further investigations into measures to secure and protect the most valuable assets was not necessary.

The author will provide a sneak peek into the efforts that went into actually implementing the security capabilities that OPC UA promised, and shows how devastating the awakening was when many of those capabilities were not laid out as expected in the standard documents.
