In the upcoming years, electricity consumers with an annual consumption of over 6,000 kWh will be equipped with Smart Meter Gateways that enable bidirectional communication with electricity meters and control boxes in buildings. Taking the viewpoint of different actors and system services, this talk compares today’s world with a possible world after the SMGW rollout. There are many examples of how the deployment of SMGWs can change the operation of electricity grids. Energy suppliers can manage their balancing groups more effectively by using additional information about consumption. Consumers can gain transparency about their energy flows and benefit from price fluctuations at electricity markets. Distribution system operators can gain fine-grained insights into network conditions and use new control options to maintain voltage. Transmission system operators can benefit from new control reserve providers. This talk gives insights and discusses foreseeable changes.
