In 2020, there will be 1 million electric cars determining the inner city impressions in Germany. In addition, aims are reduction of emissions and lowering of fuel consumption of diesel and gasoline mobility. Biofuels of the second generation protect resources and are available on a long-term basis. They are a reliable energy source for long distance and commercial vehicles. Inner engine design and material selection need to be optimised according low losses and efficient combustion progression. Suitable and wear resistant thin films enable ultra-low friction and enduring precise working machine couples. Thin film systems are introduced, which have potential for operating in biofuels. Water fractions in biofuels are of high interests. Fine distributed water droplets can effect an optimal distribution of the fuel in the combustion chamber by micro-explosions. It is target that water promotes tailored low-friction transfer layers on special thin films in tribological relative motions.
