Challenges for System Integrators and Machine Builders
Lot-size one ? the ability to cost-efficiently manufacture highly-individualized products ? is a key promise of Industrie 4.0. At Busch Jaeger in Lüdenscheid, we have built a production line where a lot-size-one product comes off the assembly line ready to ship. In our talk, we use this example to define the challenges that manufacturers and system integrators are currently still facing. Our objective is the adaptable factory where lot-size one production runs order-controlled and integrated with B2C and B2B processes, where material logistics are self-organizing, and machines support human operators. However, there is no seamless digital engineering, plug-and-produce-capable machines cannot simply be ordered from stock, and quality-perfection for unique products is a challenge of its own. We will share our insights on how we successfully addressed these challenges using OPC UA and Digital Twin technologies and close with recommendations on engineering practices and standardization.
