Description

Fiber optics sensing methods are evolving as key enabling techniques to drive machinery industry forward by monitoring rolling bearings such as pumps and oil-flooded screw compressors.

A broadly employed sensing method is Fiber Bragg Grating i.e. basically the incorporation of multiples fiber optical strain gauges and temperature sensors within a single mode optical fiber. Alternatively, distributed optical fiber sensing based techniques are also under development and can be combined with FBG elements to enhance its sensing capabilities. Those features enable Process Equipment Optimization by sensing within rolling bearings of the following parameters: dynamic and static loads and their directions, rotation speeds, temperatures, lubrication conditions, FFT strain spectra for condition monitoring of the complete equipment and shaft alignment plots.
