Beuth Verlag, founded in 1924 in Berlin as a subsidiary of DIN, is one of the largest publishing houses in Germany for technical and scientific literature. It differs, however, from other such publishing houses in that the surplus income it earns is used to finance the standards work undertaken by DIN. The name of the company, pronounced 'Boyt', derives from a pioneering figure in the economic life of 19th century Prussia, Christian Wilhelm Peter Beuth. Today he is perhaps best known as the founder of the Prussian Institute of Crafts and Trades, the forerunner of the Technical University, Berlin.
