Sweepers and robotic vacuum cleaners for floors and surfaces are used every day, whether it be for cleaning private households or commercial or industrial facilities. Many cleaning machines employ rotating brushes for this purpose. Cleaning power is usually reduced after just a few rounds of operation. The reason for this is that long-fibred dirt such as hair or textiles can get caught in the rotating brushes and will then wind itself around the bristles as well as the brush roller. This stubborn dirt can be quite a challenge when the brushes need cleaning. Only a few systems are known that enable a simple - albeit always manual - cleaning of the brushes. Here, having been removed from the cleaning appliance, the brush, together with its bristles, is usually surrounded by a cage resembling a grid that also rotates. By manually pulling this cage off the brush, the fibres and hairs caught in the bristles are brushed off them. Thus this manual cleaning, which often involves dismantling the appliances, requires a major time effort as well as having to be in direct contact with the long-fibred dirt. Scientists have developed a rotating brush for floor-cleaning appliances that features a self-cleaning function based on a novel mechanism for the bristles and rollers. The main roller consists of an inner and an outer pipe rotating on offset axles. In a rotational movement, the stiff bundles of bristles fixed to the inner pipe pass through defined gaps in the outer pipe in sequence - they emerge and then duck in again. As the bristles duck in, the dirt is automatically brushed off the body of the brush. An elastic deformation element in the gaps ensures that the bristles are not worn down. The dirt remains are moved to a collecting container through the rotation of the entire roller.
