The Furby exhibit demonstrates that in an integrated network IT security must be ensured for all components involved. The toy Furby has a Bluetooth interface with which it can communicate with an app. Via this interface, own audio files can be uploaded to the Furby. Thus, the Furby can be misused in order to control a virtual assistant nearby. This interaction between toy and virtual assistant can be a security risk.
The Furby demonstrator is an example for a device that opens up new attack scenarios in smart home environments. In industrial plants for example, a manipulated private mobile phone could be a gateway for IT security breaches.
The Competence Center for IT Security of the FZI sensitises companies for vulnerabilities of IT security and researches hands-on solutions.
With the project Cyberwehr Baden-Württemberg, the FZI runs a project for the state-wide development of regional infrastructures for first aid in case of an IT security incident in small and medium-sized enterprises in Baden-Württemberg.
