The challenge:Complete wheels must be automatically screw-fastened to the wheel hub and assembled on a continuously moving production line. The solution:Production processes in the automotive industry are characterized by a very high degree of automation. The act of assembling the wheels to the body of the car may look simple but in fact requires extremely high levels of precision and sophisticated reliability engineering. For this application, IBG has developed the world's first fully automatic wheel assembly system that can cope with the requirements of a continuously moving production line. The industrial robots are each equipped with two independent camera systems at the gripper. The type of wheel, the position, the rotational orientation and the level of the wheel when it is being picked up are identified with the assistance of a 2D camera system and IBG's dedicated software. After the wheel has been gripped, a 3D camera system reads the spatial position and the rotational orientation of the wheel hub. The screws of the vehicle wheels are fastened in synchronicity with the movements of the car, on the basis of the correction values that were delivered by the vision system. The automatic establishment of torque and rotational angles during all fitting processes allows you to perform full and complete production checks, retracing each and every step of the assembly process.
