Product description

Increase in the share of fluctuating, regenerative energy sources in electric energy supply requires additional measures to compensate feed-in fluctuations. Apart from pump storage stations and batteries, the storage of liquid hydrogen as an alternative carrier of large amounts of energy is a promising method to integrate wind and solar power in existing electricity grids.A new plant concept of the Institute of Technical Physics combines the three components of a long-term store, a short-term store, and hydrogen liquifier such that existing limitations of the individual components are compensated by the synergetic interaction of all parts. In the new plant concept, the long-term store is complemented by a short-term store in the form of a superconducting magnetic energy store (SMES). SMES are characterized by rapid response times and low losses of the charge-discharge cycles. Low-temperature cooling required for the generation of the magnetic field of the SMES is taken over by the liquid hydrogen in the long-term store, a separate cryotank is not required. Rapid fluctuations of wind and solar plants can be buffered in a short term by the SMES and losses of the complete system can be reduced massively. The third component is an integrated, newly developed hydrogen liquifier. The combination of these three components considerably increases the efficiency of compact hydrogen stores in the order of GWhs.
