Magnetic Shape Memory (MSM) alloys are ferromagnetic materials that produce motion and force under moderate magnetic fields. They are typically single crystalline alloys of Nickel, Manganese and Gallium, and are able to produce 6% strain under up to 2 N/mm² external load. Frequencies up to the low kilohertz range can be achieved. ETO MAGNETIC has developed this material as well as actuator prototypes in recent years to a new level of maturity. ETO's new MAGNETOSHAPE® technology is now ready to conquer applications.
The MAGNETOSHAPE® circuit breaker demonstrates a combined thermal and magnetic switching of the MSM material in a single actuator unit. Compared to conventional circuit breakers, the electromagnetic switching for short circuit protection and the thermal switching of a bimetal for overload protection are provided by a single MAGNETOSHAPE® actuator. This results in a simplified design, less components,a reduced installation space. The concept can be adapted to different required tripping characteristics. The general priciple can be used also for further applications, where a thermally induced safety function needs to be combined with an electrically induced ultrafast switching.
