The trend toward increasing digitalisation in industrial automation requires changes in academic didactics. On one hand side, classical information technology influences industrial automation more and more and on the other
hand side, modern methods open opportunities to change conduction of lectures and laboratory exercises. Despite e-Learning or web-based learning concepts, practical orientation of education must dominate in industrial automation. In the context of research and development activities motionand
robot-control-systems were developed that allow easy extension of learning contents beyond classic IEC 61131-3 programming. Examples for these extensions are programming interfaces for industrial controls and drives for languages like Lua, Java and C/C++ known from the IT sector. One application is the development of the first Sercos powered 3D printed miniature delta-robot. The use of rapid-control-prototyping tools, like MATLAB® or LabVIEW®, in combination with rapid-prototyping production
with fused-layer-modelling (FLM), demonstrates the efficiency and practical orientation as the robot uses standard components from industrial automation suppliers. Students appreciate working with the robot a lot, as it is an excellent catalyser for creativity, curiosity and expertise.
