The goal of the Collaborative Research Centre 1153 “Process Chains for the Manufacturing of Hybrid High Performance Components by Tailored Forming” is the realisation of novel process chains for the manufacturing of load-adapted hybrid solid machine elements. By combining multiple materials in a component, the manufacturing of requirement-optimised and lightweightingoriented high performance components is made possible which are purposefully adapted to their application. In the areas subjected to heavy loads, high-strength materials, such as steel, can be used; whereas lightweight metals, such as aluminium alloys, can be employed in the regions subjected to a lower loading profile, to reduce the component’s weight.
In contrast to the practice of conventional manufacturing processes of hybrid components, in which the joining takes place during forming or at the end of the process chain, in Tailored Forming, different materials are metallurgically joined in the first step and together formed in the following. Afterwards, heat treatment and machining processes are carried out to obtain the final component geometry with its required properties. This procedure allows for the production of components made of different materials which are to date not fabricable by joining, due to their complex form. In addition, the mechanical properties of the components can be improved bythermomechanical treatment of the joining zone during the forming process.
