In the life sciences sector, carriers allowing for a three-dimensional cultivation of living cells are required for research and production purposes. Tissue cultivation also requires the preservation of typical cell functions. For this purpose, the cells need to be in close contact with each other and 3-D growth must be possible. A process for the low-cost production of carriers for the 3-D cultivation of living cells has now been developed. Microcavities arranged on a plane allow for an active nutrient supply by perfusion or superfusion. The dimensions of the microcavities can be adapted to the application, such that cell aggregates can be cultivated without any deficiency symptoms. Typical cell functions are preserved. Cell adhesion can be optimized by surface modification. Combinations of monocellular layers with 3-D aggregates of various functions are feasible by design variations. When used in pharmaceutical research, it is possible to test small volumes of substances at high flow rates, to address individual microcavities, and to apply the carriers for single uses. The carrier is suited for producing 3-D stem cell cultures, tumor research, long-term cultivation of biopharmaceuticals, and for tissue engineering.
