In the BMWi joint project OptiCharge ( ), a regenerative charging station for electric vehicles was set up and put into operation. The system consists of a PV unit, a 120 kWh / 30 kW vanadium redox flow battery as a stationary electricity storage and three charging stations. The energy management takes into account the local weather forecast.

Ionic liquids (ILs) allow higher voltages than aqueous electrolytes; compared to organic electrolytes, non-volatility and non-flammability are advantageous. Viscosity and electrical conductivity are improved in three ways in the Transfercentre Sustainable Electrochemistry (Saarland University and KIST Europe, ): (i) Targeted synthesis of new ILs with reduced vdW interaction and increased conformational freedom. (ii) Addition of small amounts of water ("water in IL"). (iii) IL-supported organic redox systems.

Ionic liquids can promote the solubility and electrochemical reversibility of certain organic compounds (Patent application: PCT/EP2018/056087, 2018). “Water-in-ionic liquid” electrolytes, combined with redox-active organic materials, exhibit cell voltages up to 3 V and largely increased solubility of organic compounds, thus reaching high energy density of the electrolytes.
