Glow wire testing is carried out on plastic materials used in electrical devices. It assesses the flame-resistant properties of the plastic. As a safety test its purpose is to prevent the start or the spread of fire in the event of an electrical component becoming over heated.
Variants of the glow wire test include
Test method for end products (GWEPT)
Material flammability index (GWFI)
Ignition temperature (GWIT)
Many product standards call for a glow wire test including household appliances (commonly called white goods) in IEC60335-1, luminaires in IEC60598-1, and electrical control panels and distribution boards in IEC61439-1.
Individual product standards will state the glow wire test method to use. If you need to put your product through specific proving, our highly experienced test engineers will work with to select the most appropriate test method that proves your requirements.
You may need to prove that after a period of exposure to weather your product maintains its flame resistance. We can complement standard glow wire testing with conditioning to simulate real-life situations. Examples of environmental conditioning are
