Dr.-Ing. Olaf Sauer studied Industrial Engineering at the Karlsruhe Technical University. In 1996 he took his PhD from Prof. Spur at the Fraunhofer IPK, Berlin. He became part of Bombardier Transportation, where he introduced the Digital Mock-up and first applications of digital manufacturing. He then started his own business within the METROPLAN group, Hamburg. 2004 he joined the Karlsruhe-based Fraunhofer IOSB, being in charge of production monitoring & control until 2011. Today he is deputy head of the institute. He is member of Industrie 4.0 related committees and holds teaching positions at the University of Kassel and at the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT).
