Fraunhofer Institute for Mechatronic Systems Design IEM introduces AR
Augmented reality offers companies extensive possibilities for optimizing products and processes. The AcRoSS research project is developing a platform concept intended to help SMEs introduce data-based services.

According to the scientists involved in the “AR-based product service systems” ( AcRoSS ) project, relatively high development effort often causes small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) to shy away from using augmented reality technology. Researchers are looking to change this with their platform developed at the Fraunhofer Institute for Mechatronic Systems Design IEM . The platform provides various modular AR solutions, including elements such as gesture control or position detection. Data transfer and communication take place centrally via the corresponding platform software.
This gives companies the opportunity to integrate new technologies into their processes without having to develop themselves, while planning new, AR-based business models and smart services. Initial testing of the platform concept was a success: Mechanical engineering firm Krause-Biagosch now uses the solution to display repair manuals, while the Ariane Group uses it to provide rocket makers with assembly instructions.
