Platooning describes a concept in which several trucks can drive in close succession with the help of technical driver assistance and control systems, explain MAN and DB Schenker . The leading vehicle provides speed and direction via car-to-car communication. The main idea behind this is to save fuel for the entire platoon. In February 2018, MAN already handed over two pilot vehicles to DB Schenker. Together with the University of Fresenius , the convoys will be tested in real traffic and with professional drivers on the A9 between Munich and Nuremberg, but initially without cargo.

Scania also relies on platooning in real transport operations. Since mid-March, two convoys have been operating in Spain between Riba-roja de Túria and Getafe (350 km) and between Valladolid and Getafe (200 km), each with three Scania R 450s . The project will be carried out in collaboration with the transport company Acotral . As in Germany, in addition to saving fuel and thus more environmentally friendly logistics (the Scania R 450 was awarded Green Truck 2017 ), it is to be examined how the technology can make the working life of truck drivers more pleasant and safer. In addition, Scania has entered into a cooperation agreement with Ahola Transport in Finland. Semi-autonomous trucks with trailers and new traffic technologies are to be developed there.
