Graphene-based ultracapacitors boost fuel efficiency

Powerful ultracapacitors can be connected in parallel to lithium-ion batteries, significantly reducing the consumption of automobiles. Skeleton Technologies won the 2018 SET Award for their graphene solutions.

The ultracapacitors from Skeleton Technologies are based on curved graphene. Compared with other products on the market, they offer four times the power and twice the energy density. The startup from Start Up Energy Transition (SET) , an initiative of the German Energy Agency (dena) and the World Energy Council received the 2018 Set Award in the category of “innovative mobility” for this innovative solution.

Ultracapacitors save energy in an electrical field, allowing them to charge and discharge much faster than batteries, helping them last longer and making them up to 100% efficient thanks to their minimal internal resistance. They are also lighter and normally do not contain any harmful chemicals or toxic metals. Connecting them in parallel to lithium-ion batteries increases their service life and safety, and enables them to store kinetic energy during regenerative braking and supply the energy needed for start-stop applications. This in turn lowers automobile fuel consumption and emissions.
