Smart meters are the key technology when it comes to digitizing the energy transition . They provide the players – from grid operators and electricity suppliers to consumers – with the necessary generation and consumption information. This should enable the intelligent control and more efficient use of electricity grids in future, while reducing the need for grid expansion and the costs of energy system transition. With the presentation of the market declaration for intelligent metering systems, the Federal Office for Information Security (BSI) has now stated that smart meters are technically ready to be rolled out. This is the starting signal for the mandatory fitting of metering points with intelligent metering systems. High-consumption households and companies with an annual electricity consumption of between 6,000 and 100,000 kWh will initially be affected.
The German Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy (BMWi) provides comprehensive information on smart meters and related questions on its website .
