Germany’s largest research organization plans to invest €11.4 million a year in AI research. The money will be used to finance the new Helmholtz Artificial Intelligence Cooperation Unit (HAICU) platform. HAICU will consist of a central unit (HAICU central) and five regional units (HAICU local). HAICU’s central unit will be located at the Helmholtz Center in Munich - German Research Center for Environmental Health (HMGU), underscoring the importance the Helmholtz Association attaches to AI in the life sciences and, in particular, biomedicine.
The five local centers will focus on specific research fields, such as energy, matter, and the environment, and will be based at Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT), Forschungszentrum Jülich (FZ Jülich), the Helmholtz-Zentrum Geesthacht Center for Material and Coastal Research (HZG), the Helmholtz-Zentrum Dresden-Rossendorf (HZDR), and the German Aerospace Center (DLR) in Oberpfaffenhofen.
