On 16 October, the 5th German Startup Monitor (GSM) was presented in Berlin in the presence of German minister of economy Brigitte Zypries.

The 5th GSM – which represents 1,837 startups, 4,245 founders and 19,913 employees – is the most representative study of startups in Germany. The GSM creates transparency for the German startup ecosystem and generates catalysts for the future.

As in 2016, the study’s data set is diverse: even though Berlin remains the hub of the German startup scene, Germany’s entire startup ecosystem is maturing and a trend towards more regional ecosystems is emerging. Furthermore, the proportion of women founders increased for the third time in a row to 14.6 percent.

The three most incisive findings of the 5th GSM are:

  • More Europe: 82.7 percent of the startups interviewed want to internationalize further – more than ever before – with 34.4 percent indicating other European countries as the most attractive markets.
  • More diversity: 63.9 percent of startups agree that the German startup landscape profits from immigration. 28.6 percent of startup employees are not German, in Berlin the figure is 47.7 percent.
  • More cooperation: 67.5 percent of startups cooperate with other startups (2016: 53.4 percent). However, only 50.4 percent of GSM startups pursue cooperation with established companies (2016: 70 percent).
