900-meter advantage with single-pair Ethernet switches
Weidmüller is introducing a new unmanaged switch with SPE connection that, according to its developers, is set to take the performance of industrial applications to a new level. SPE technology increases the range of the internet connection; at the same time, the two-core cables enable parallel power transmission.

The transmission of data over long distances and different levels is a major challenge in many industrial applications. In some cases, power needs to be transmitted from the switch to the sensor in addition to the data. In this context, the new unmanaged 10Base-T1L SPE switch from Weidmüller, a leading manufacturer of electrical connectivity and electronics based in Detmold, Germany, is a groundbreaking solution for companies facing this particular challenge.
For distances of up to one kilometer
The 10Base-T1L-SPE switch is designed to ensure reliable data transmission over distances of up to one kilometer. By comparison, conventional RJ45-based Ethernet has a range of only 100 meters. At ten megabits per second, its bandwidth is also significantly higher than the RS485 standard over a similar distance. Weidmüller's 10Base-T1L SPE switch not only provides a reliable network connection for industrial devices such as sensors, but also a high-performance one compared to other interfaces. Furthermore, the plug-in face of the SPE connection is industry-compatible, which prevents micro-interruptions in transmission.
Data and power supply in a small space
One outstanding feature of the 10Base-T1L SPE switch is its support for Power over Data Line (PoDL) up to class 15. This enables a power supply of up to 50 watts at the end device. Features such as SCCP and force mode simplify the setup of power supply for new devices. SPE technology is said to be particularly advantageous in environments where space is limited: Both data and power can flow through a single wire pair, so only one cable needs to be laid. This also enables cost-effective connection of sensors in various industrial scenarios by using copper cables instead of expensive fiber optic technology. Compared to fiber optics, copper has the advantage of larger bending radii and reduced installation effort, since no splicing is necessary.
PROFINET Class A conformity
The Quality of Service (QoS) functionality of the 10Base-T1L SPE switch enables the distribution of resources in the network and ensures that data traffic is prioritized. This gives priority to important applications and ensures that bandwidth is used optimally. This feature also achieves PROFINET Class A compliance, which enables seamless integration into PROFINET-compatible networks.
Comprehensive SPE infrastructure
In addition to the SPE switches, Weidmüller will be presenting a detailed range of Single Pair Ethernet components. This consists of plug-in connectors for on-site assembly as well as ready-made patch cables. The company offers the device connectivity for the various applications in the field in protection classes IP20 and IP67.
