The Renewable Energies forum, a program organized by the German Renewable Energy Federation (BEE) together with Deutsche Messe, is entering its third year at HANNOVER MESSE 2014. Representatives from business, politics and research discuss products, services and solutions for a sustainable, secure and competitive energy mix – and hydropower is one of the topics.

Hydroelectricity is a clean and reliable energy source. There are some 7,500 hydro plants in Germany today. According to the German Association of Hydroelectric Plants (BDW), the hydro plants currently operating in Germany have an installed capacity of 4,300 megawatts. BDW estimates that electricity produced from hydropower in recent years fluctuated between 20,000 and 29,000 megawatt hours depending on precipitation, supplying between 800,000 and 1.2 million households with electricity. BDW supports the further expansion of hydroelectricity, and its President Hans-Peter Lang addresses this topic under the title "Hydropower: the old and new world of the energy transition" at the Renewable Energies forum in Hall 27, Stand E18 (7 April, 4:20 p.m.). Günther Oettinger, EU Energy Commissioner, is also speaking on the Monday of the fair about the energy transition in the European context (2:10 p.m.) and Minister-President Stephan Weil examines the energy transition from the Lower Saxony standpoint (Tuesday, 11:30 a.m.). Many other presentations and podium discussions await visitors at the Renewable Energies forum in the flagship Energy trade fair.
