Carbon rear wheel swing arm gets the JEC Innovation Award

At the JEC World , which took place from March 6 to 8, BMW Motorcycle presented a carbon fiber composite (CFRP) rear wheel swing arm and was awarded a prize in the Recreation & Sports category . What is new is that these materials can now be inexpensively installed in series and yet are variable in strength. For parts that are exposed to high stress levels, strong continuous fibers are used. If the requirements are not quite that high, an injection molding volume with short CFRP recycling fibers is used. In addition, various composite and metal inserts as well as additional thermoplastically joinable CFRP plates enable further scalability in terms of strength. The required component properties can be adjusted with just one tool.
Carmaker BMW is one of the most important German players with regard to Mexico, this year’s partner country of the Hannover Messe . The Bavarians had initially envisioned the site to be a production springboard for the US market, but are currently thinking aloud about whether they should expand this location. Andreas Klugescheid, Vice President of Governmental Affairs at BMW, will speak on this topic at the Hannover Messe on April 24 at the DIHK panel discussion with other foreign trade experts.
