What is the best way to transport clean power from the windy north to the power-hungry south? Heated debates on possible transport methods, in particular in Bavaria, show that the final word has not yet been spoken here. The alternative of an underground high-voltage grid desired by nearly every region involved seems at first glance to be achievable and popular, but what about technical and economic feasibility? Otto von Guericke University of Magdeburg has examined the issue and is presenting its concept for the construction of a power pipeline at HANNOVER MESSE 2014.
To transport power from renewable energy resources and expand the entire supply network, the university has developed underground pipeline technology that can transport high voltage AC and DC power in the gigawatt range. The real innovation here is the fabrication of steel sheathing, conductors and insulating casting compound directly on site. Where this is not possible, prefabricated segments can be brought to the location and attached to the lines. Additional arguments in favor of this new technology are its extreme robustness, low manufacturing cost and complete recyclability.
