Demand reaches new record levels in the engineering professions. This is the conclusion reached in the current Ingenieurmonitor (Engineer monitor) published quarterly by the Institute of German Industry (IW) on behalf of the Association of German engineers (VDI) . There is currently an average of 43,590 job vacancies per month in the computer science sector; specialists with both IT and electrical engineering skills are wanted in particular. There is also a very high demand for civil engineers (about 33,680 vacancies). A total of 33,710 vacancies were reported in the machine and vehicle technology as well as in the energy and electrical engineering sectors.

This constitutes an increase of 11.3% or almost 13,160 additional vacancies compared to the same quarter of the previous year. One reason for the rising demand for engineers and computer scientists is increasing digitization, from automated driving to the smart home. The fact that many jobs cannot be filled has an inhibiting effect on economic growth. For example, as part of an SME survey conducted by DZ Bank, two-thirds of companies said they had trouble finding potential employees; as a result, one in six companies was unable to implement planned IT or digitization projects.
